Egypt will once again take centre stage in African women’s club football as the Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirms the North African nation as host of the 2025 CAF Women’s Champions League, scheduled from 8 to 21 November 2025.

The announcement, made on Friday, ends weeks of speculation over which country would host the continent’s premier women’s club competition. The final draw will be held on Monday, 27 October 2025, at CAF headquarters in Cairo starting at 13h00 local time (10h00 GMT) — marking the first major event in the lead-up to the highly anticipated tournament.

It will be the second time Egypt hosts the CAF Women’s Champions League, following the success of the inaugural edition in 2021, which laid the foundation for the professionalisation of women’s club football across Africa.

Powerhouses and debutants headline the field

This year’s tournament will feature eight teams, representing CAF’s six zonal unions along with the host nation’s club and the defending champions.

The lineup includes:

  • Host nation: FC Masar (Egypt)
  • Defending champions: TP Mazembe (DR Congo)
  • UNAF (North Africa): AS FAR (Morocco)
  • WAFU A (West Africa A): USFAS Bamako (Mali)
  • WAFU B (West Africa B): ASEC Mimosas (Ivory Coast)
  • UNIFFAC (Central Africa): 15 Agosto de Akonibe (Equatorial Guinea)
  • COSAFA (Southern Africa): Gaborone United Ladies (Botswana)
  • CECAFA (East Africa): JKT Queens (Tanzania)

In accordance with competition regulations, FC Masar and TP Mazembe will be placed as top seeds in Groups A and B respectively — a move that ensures balance and competitiveness in the draw.

Sarah Essam to headline the draw ceremony

Adding glamour to the occasion, Sarah Essam, Egypt’s trailblazing international footballer, will conduct the draw. The 25-year-old — who became the first Arab woman to play professional football in England and Spain — continues to be a symbol of inspiration for women across the continent.

Essam, who featured as an Official FIFA World Cup Ambassador in 2022, now plays for Halifax Women FC in England while representing Egypt’s national team. Her inclusion in the draw highlights CAF’s ongoing commitment to celebrating women who have broken barriers both on and off the pitch.

A tournament of growing stature

The CAF Women’s Champions League, now in its fifth edition, has rapidly evolved into a cornerstone of African women’s football. It not only showcases the continent’s elite clubs but also provides a platform for emerging talents to attract global attention.

From AS FAR’s continental triumphs to TP Mazembe’s rise as the reigning champions, the competition has become a proving ground for tactical innovation and player development. With Egypt’s proven hosting record and the growing investment in women’s football, this year’s edition promises to be one of the most competitive yet.

As the draw approaches in Cairo, anticipation builds — not just for who will face whom, but for another celebration of African women’s football excellence.
