Mphatso Kamanga”s late own goal gifted rookies Chitipa United a shock 1-0 win over fancied Mighty Mukuru Wanderers at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre on Saturday afternoon.
Kamanga deflected the ball past goalkeeper William Thole while attempting to clear a corner-kick to inflict a first loss of the season on the seven-time TNM Super League champions Wanderers.
That goal proved decisive as Chitipa held on to their slender lead to diffuse attacks from the hosts who have had a flying start to the season under British coach Mark Harrison.
The former Gor Mahia and Highlanders mentor had fielded a 3-5-2 formation with leading scorer striker Christopher Kumwembe partnering Vincent Nyangulu upfront, skipper Stanley Sanudi playing in a more advanced right wing back role and Wisdom Mpinganjira manning the opposite flank.
Wanderers struggled to get out of their half often playing non-progressive backwards passes, little wonder they hardly mustered a clear shot on target.
The afternoon was further dampened for the hosts as Kumwembe limped off with a swollen knee.
It was Wanderers’ first league loss in seven games which leaves them still second on 14 points.
The first away win for Chitipa took their tally to 10 points.
The action continues on Sunday when holders and leaders FCB Nyasa Big Bullets face struggling Red Lions.
Bullets lead the 16-member log table courtesy of a superior goal aggregate after tying on 14 points with Wanderers.
