- Canon Yaoundé beat YOSA 2-0 in a delayed MTN Elite One game on Wednesday to widen the gap from the relegation zone
- YOSA lost their ninth game of the season while registered their fifth win
- Coach Akosemoh Theodore stepped away from YOSA but that didn’t help matters against Canon
Yong Sport Academy (YOSA) of Bamenda suffered their ninth defeat of the ongoing MTN Elite One championship season on Wednesday as they bowed to Canon Yaoundé in a delayed match day 11 fixture at the Omnisport Annex stadium in Yaoundé.
Second-half goals from Paul Henry Tchikeu and Samuel Fonyuy was enough for coach Olivier Nankam’s team to record their first home win of the season and end a run of four games without a win for the Mekok Megonda.
Canon came into the game on a run of three straight defeats but couldn’t ask for a better opponent to put an end to that. YOSA had to deal with the resignation of their coach on Monday, alongside the suspension of the other members of the technical staff, plus their poor run of results and the frustration it creates.
The first 45 minutes provided little sparks for both sides as Kongyuy Jude and his mates had to deal with an almost different Canon side after they opted for eight changes from the starting XI that lost 0-2 against Astres.
Tchikeu who was returning to the team made his comeback count when he struck the opener just after resumption from the post. The opening goal forced YOSA to be a little more daring in such for the equaliser. As they opted for the more attacking approach, it left space in behind for Samuel Fonyuy to score the second in the 62nd minute and that was it.
The blast of the final whistle for the close of the game brought the usual sight of YOSA players crashing to the floor in disappointment while the Canon contingent celebrated a victory and even more as before kick-off they were reports the staff had been given an ultimatum to win or face a sack.
The win takes Canon Yaoundé up to the 8th spot on the log with 20 points, two ahead of last season’s champions, Victoria United.
YOSA on their past still top the league from the bottom with just seven points picked up in 13 games so far this season.
Both sides need to quickly work out a strategy for regular positive results if they want to be in the MTN Elite One championship next season.
