Augustine Eguavoen and others, rumored replacement for José Peseiro

58-years-old Augustine Eguaveon, may just be making his return to the coaching bench of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, after the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) failed to extend José Peseiro’s contract on Friday.

The Gaffer, who resigned from this post after Nigeria’s Round of 16 exit in Cameroon, may be called to act on an interim basis, at least against São Tomé and Principe on September 10. A match counting for day six in Africa cup of nations qualifiers.

Equaveon currently holds the position of NFF Technical Director. Sports Journalist Adepoju Tobi Samuel reports, A section of the NFF executives are against the Ex super eagles player from occupying this post. However, the secretariat backs his candidacy.

He adds, this ex manager is not the only name considered for this Job. Other options include; Finidi George and Salisu Yusuf, first and second assistant coaches of the Super Eagles.

Salisu Yusuf is the coach of the U23 side. He was first appointed Gaffer of this three – time AFCON winners On the 24th of October 2016, before his bribery scandal in 2018.

The main option is yet to be finalized. José Peseiro’s contract came to an end last June 2023.

Reports indicate, the NFF has failed to come to a consensus with the Portuguese over his $70,000 salary.
