Cameroon legend Pierre Achille Webo has been handed his first opportunity as a head coach at professional level after being promoted to lead USL Dunkerque in France’s Ligue 2 BKT.

The 44-year-old takes over following the departure of Albert Sánchez, who has left Dunkerque to become head coach of Spanish second-tier side Las Palmas, signing a deal until 2028.

Dunkerque opted for an internal solution, promoting Webo from his position as assistant coach. The club announced that the former Cameroon international will serve as head coach until further notice, while stressing its continued focus on its Ligue 2 objectives.

Webo joined Dunkerque in 2025 as part of Sánchez’s coaching staff after previously working as an assistant at Istanbul Başakşehir and Ankaragücü. His promotion now gives him the chance to take direct responsibility for a professional team for the first time.

The timing leaves little room for preparation. Dunkerque are currently 10th in Ligue 2 with 12 points after 10 matches, having recently beaten Nantes 3-2 before drawing 1-1 with Metz.

Webo’s first assignment comes immediately, with Dunkerque travelling to face Rodez on Friday in the 11th round of the Ligue 2 campaign.

For the former Indomitable Lion, it is the beginning of a potentially defining chapter in his coaching career — and another opportunity for a Cameroonian football figure to make his mark in European football.
