Aliou Cisse, Senegal’s esteemed national team coach, has reached a remarkable milestone, becoming the most capped coach in Africa and earning a place among the top ten globally.

On Thursday, June 5, Cisse celebrated his 100th game as a coach during the match against the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Despite the high hopes, the occasion was bittersweet as the Teranga Lions were held to a 1-1 draw at home by the formidable AFCON semi-finalists.

Since taking the helm in 2015, Cisse, the former captain of the Teranga Lions, has been lauded as the most successful Senegalese coach to date.

At 48 years old, he has guided Senegal to two AFCON finals, triumphing in one against the record-holding Egyptian team through a tense post-match penalty shootout in Cameroon.

Cisse’s leadership has also seen Senegal through two World Cup tournaments, with the team advancing past the group stages in the 2022 event. His tenure has been marked by an impressive record of 65 victories, 21 draws, and only 14 defeats.

The transformation of the Senegalese team under Cisse’s guidance has been profound, a stark contrast to the disarray of 2012-2013. In terms of winning percentages, he is second only to Bruno Metsu, who achieved a 68% success rate.

The Federation has recognized Cisse’s exceptional contributions, reaffirming their trust in his vision by extending his contract until 2026, even in the face of an early exit from the AFCON in the round of 16.

Cisse’s tenure has not only elevated Senegal’s standing but has also inspired confidence across Africa, encouraging a reliance on local coaching talent.

With a century of games as a coach under his belt, the former Nîmes Olympique player stands as a towering figure in coaching, both in Africa and on the world stage. His journey from the pitch to the sidelines is a testament to his enduring commitment to the sport and his country.
