The head coach of Guinea’s senior men’s national team, Kaba Diawara isn’t expecting the scenario of the last Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as the team prepares to face Equatorial Guinea.

Guinea crashed out in the knockout stage of AFCON 2021 in Cameroon after defeat in the hands of Gambia.

Diawara’s side which made it to the Round of 16 of AFCON 2023 as one of the best third-placed sides will face Equatorial Guinea on Sunday with the coach looking forward to the historic match.

“We prepared for the game as usual with training. We are rather focusing on the tactical aspects,” Diawara commented during the pre-match press conference in Abidjan on Saturday.

“We were eliminated by Gambia years ago. From this stage, no matter who you play against. We are prepared for the game.

“Tomorrow’s game is going to be historic. The ambition is to bear the flag. We took it from the Head of state. We have players that have decided to wear this jersey and defend the land. We couldn’t win this as players but we now have players that can do it.”

When asked about his plan and formula for the encounter against an unbeaten side, the former Guinean international has just one plan.

“There is no idea or formula.” He continued. “The formula is to win the game. We know that our opponents played well during group matches. There is a difference between group games and knockout stages.

“No. We don’t have regret finishing third in the group. In Group A, we had Nigeria and Cote d’Ivoire that have won this title. I am not undermining any team. In either position, what matters is qualifying for the next stage.

“We can go all the way to penalties. We are prepared for that.” He concluded.
