- The once-close relationship between former Cameroonian footballers Gérémie Njitap and Samuel Eto’o has taken a bitter turn after several disputes
- The rivalry was a result of Njitap’s announcement to take legal action against Fecafoot, over the non-enforcement of around fifteen court rulings in favor of players
- Before the escalation, Njitap and Eto’o, former teammates, had a previous clash over Fecafoot’s refusal to allow Njitap to enter the Indomitable Lions’ dressing room after their 3-2 victory over Gambia
In a dramatic turn of events, the once-close relationship between former Cameroonian footballer Gérémi Njitap and Samuel Eto’o has taken a bitter turn.
Njitap, leading the players’ union SYNAFOC, has now officially condemned Eto’o’s FECAFOOT to FIFA.
The conflict escalated when SYNAFOC, under Njitap’s leadership, announced its intention to take legal action against FECAFOOT over the non-enforcement of around fifteen court rulings in favor of players.
SYNAFOC had successfully obtained condemnation of FECAFOOT by FIFA’s Disciplinary Chamber, resulting in a fine of approximately six million francs in three cases involving Junior Godstine Folhe, Boris Oum Mananga, and Pierre Varèze ZANG NGAYENE.
Njitap’s move has been seen as a direct challenge to Eto’o’s leadership of FECAFOOT. The two former teammates have now found themselves on opposing sides of Cameroonian football. SYNAFOC’s support for Eto’o during his election as FECAFOOT president has since given way to a distancing, much to Eto’o’s displeasure.
The tension further intensified when SYNAFOC attempted to hold its Salary Barometer event, only to be met with a police presence trying to shut it down. Njitap saw this as a signature move of Eto’o, reminiscent of the ban imposed on club presidents who tried to create an association to compete with Eto’o’s Fécafoot-aligned Association of Elite Clubs (ACEC).
Despite the obstacles, SYNAFOC was able to hold its event and reveal the dire financial situation of Cameroonian footballers, contradicting the claims made by FECAFOOT and its supporters.
The rivalry between Njitap and Eto’o has deep roots, dating back to when Njitap was denied access to the Indomitable Lions’ dressing room after their 3-2victory over The Gambia during AFCON.
