AEK Athens’ 2023/24 UEFA Europa League journey ended on Thursday evening at the Opap Arena following their 0-1 defeat to Carlos Baleba’s Brighton and Hove Albion in a game Cameroon international, Harold Moukoudi featured as a right center-back.
Joao Pedro’s 55th minute goal from the penalty spot turned out to be the major highlight of the match day five contest which the hosts finished with a man-less.
Hosts AEK finished the game with ten men after Mijat Gaćinović was sent off following a second booking after just over an hour.
Though Moukoudi’s AEK dominated possession and registered more shots on target, Brighton who brought on Baleba as a late substitute hanged on to get the crucial victory on the night rivals Olympique Marseille of Francois Regis Mughe also won to move top of the group by a point.
Cameroon international Moukoudi was a joy to watch in his makeshift position. He initiated most of the AEK incursions on the right flank and was present in stopping most offensive moves from the visitors.
The sending off of Gaćinović reduced the chances of achieving a comeback in the game, thus condemning Moukoudi’s employers to a third defeat in the group stage of the 2023/24 UEFA Europa League competition.
Despite their elimination, AEK that will host Aris this weekend in the Greek Super League will travel to Amsterdam on December 14 for a formality match day six encounter against Ajax Amsterdam.
Moukoudi’s fourth appearances of the season in the UEFA Europa League didn’t go as planned while Baleba who came on fir the final two minutes of regulation time plus added time was part of those who achieved Brighton’s third group stage win to take their points tally to ten so far.
