Group A of the 2023 CAF Women’s Champions League were concluded with the third and final games in Korhogo and San Pedro, Ivory Coast.
Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies (South Africa) which sealed qualification for the semi-final faces host and bottom of the table ahead of the game, Athletico FC (Ivory Coast) which needed a win.
Sporting Club Casablanca (Morocco) needed a win against JKT Queens which also had to avoid defeat and hope the result of the other match favour them.
After a goalless first half of missed chances from Athletico FC, the halftime team talk and substitutions from Jerry Tshabalala did some sort of magic.
With SC Casablanca having a 3-0 lead at halftime, Athletico FC had to score four un-replied goals in the second half and pilled up pressure on the 2021 champions league winners in a bid to put up a fight.
The goals were not forthcoming for the host despite numerous chances.
The South Africans capitalized on Athletico’s missed chances to break the deadlock in the 78th minute thanks to Miche Minnes who graciously made use of a mistake in the defence of the opponents.
A brace within two minutes of the late embers of the game from the player of the match, Refilwe Tolakale sealed a 3-0 win and confirmed Sundowns as Group A winners with a maximum of nine points.
Debutant, CS Casablanca took the second position in the group after a 4-1 win over JKT Queens in San Pedro.
The Moroccans raced to a 3-0 lead at halftime thanks to goals from Meryem Hajri (penalty), Chaynaa Mourtaji, and N’Guessan Koffi.
Stumai Abdullahi pulled a goal back for the Tanzania side in the 56th minute but SC Casablanca returned the favours with their fourth goal of the game to restore their three-goal lead.
Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies will face Group B runners-up while SC Casablanca will trade tackles with Group B winners in the semi-final.
Holders, ASFAR FC (Morocco) will play AS Mande (Mali) in San Pedro while Ampem Darkoa (Ghana) settle scores with Huracanes (Equatorial Guinea) in the final Group B games to determine the two teams that will join Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies and SC Casablanca in the last four.
