African teams benefited from their wonderful performance at the just concluded FIFA Women’s World Cup as they moved up on the latest FIFA Rankings released on Friday, August 25, 2023.
Nigeria moved eight places to the 32nd position in the world and remained Africa’s top-ranked women’s football team after reaching back-to-back Round of 16 at the FIFA Women’s World Cup winning one of their four games and keeping three clean sheets.
African champions, South Africa also moved nine places to 45 in the world and second in Africa after reaching the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time.
Morocco was the highest mover on the rankings as the North African side moved 14 places to 58th in the world and fourth in Africa.
The team also reached the Round of 16 at their maiden Women’s World Cup.
The only African team to crash out at the group stage of the World Cup, Zambia also moved eight places to 69th in the world and seventh in Africa.
Cameroon maintained its third position in Africa and 56th in the world despite not qualifying for the World Cup.
Ghana, Ivory Coast, Tunisia, Equatorial Guinea, and Algeria complete the top ten ranked teams in Africa.
