African football icon Yaya Touré has been appointed head coach of Slovak champions ŠK Slovan Bratislava, marking the first senior managerial role of his coaching career.
The former Côte d’Ivoire captain and Manchester City legend has signed a two-year deal with the club, taking over after the departure of long-serving coach Vladimír Weiss Sr.
Touré inherits one of the most successful teams in Slovakia, with Slovan Bratislava coming off another league title and preparing for the UEFA Champions League qualifiers, which begin from the second preliminary round.
The appointment could also have a special significance for Cameroon international Nana Sidoine, who is part of the Slovan Bratislava squad. The defender could now continue his development under one of Africa’s most decorated footballers, whose career included spells at Barcelona, Manchester City and Olympiacos, as well as a triumphant 2015 Africa Cup of Nations campaign with Côte d’Ivoire.
Although still relatively new to management, Touré has steadily built coaching experience in recent years and now takes on his biggest challenge yet. His arrival is expected to attract significant attention to the Slovak champions, with many eager to see whether the four-time African Player of the Year can replicate his success as a player from the dugout.
For Nana Sidoine and Slovan Bratislava, the new era under Yaya Touré begins with high expectations and the ambition of reaching the group stages of the UEFA Champions League.
