Wamba Leonel of defending Algerian champions CR Belouzidad will get their 2023/24 CAF Champions League campaign this Friday night at home to last season’s CAF Confederation Cup runners-up, Yanga SC of Tanzania.

The ten-time Algerian champions in their second consecutive season in the group stage of the CAF Champions League have the tough visitors on their plate this evening at the Stade 5 Juillet 1962 in Algiers.

Belouzidad, last season’s quarter-finalist will be hoping to continue from where they left in the preliminaries of the competition, booking their place in the last 16 after a convincing 6-2 aggregate win against Botswana’s Bo Rangers.

Friday’s encounter will be the first meeting of both clubs in the competition but already a decisive one for the underdogs of group D, going by the ability of Al Ahly SC and Ghanaian Champions Medeama FC.

High-flying Yanga SC enter the contest on a run of five consecutive wins in their domestic championship. In fact they have won 13 and lost once in their past 14 matches while Belouzidad have suffered defeats to USM Algier and USM Khencela and won three of the past five games.

Wamba is expected to inspire the Reds through the night as he hopes to add to the five goals scored so far in the preliminary rounds of the competition.

The other group D outfits Medeama and current holders Al Ahly SC will face off in the other appointment on Saturday in Cairo.

The opening group stage game of the season will pit Pyramids SC against multiple winners TP Mazembe.
