Wydad Athletic Club (WAC) of Casablanca have appointed former Indomitable Lions of Cameroon fitness coach Sven Ludwig Vandenbroeck, as their head coach in replacement of Spanish trainer Juan Carlos Garrido, who was sacked on Friday after a disappointing 1-1 draw at home to title rivals AS FAR.

Spaniard Juan, took over from Mehdi Nefti two months ago, but sources say WAC management wasn’t satisfied with his output especially after the Simba SC tie which they won on post-match penalties after suffering a 0-1 defeat in the first-leg in Dar Es Salaam.

43-year-old Sven whose last job was at Saudi side Abha returns to Morocco where he trained AS FAR between 2021-2022. He has been handed a short-term contract and the task to guide the club through the semi-final of the CAF Champions League and catch his former club who are a point ahead in the title race.

The Belgian is no stranger to African football. Besides AS FAR, he has been head coach of Tanzanian giants Simba SC and was part of Cameroon’s technical staff when they won the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations under current Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Henry Broos.

The two-time Tanzania League winner and the Moroccan Throne cup winner held his first training session with the players on Friday and will be in the dugout this Saturday when WAC host Sporting Club Chabab Mohammedia in a match day 25 fixture of the Botola Pro.

Sven’s first real test will be next weekend when Wydad confronts CAF Champions League favorites Mamelodi Sundowns in the semi-final of this season’s competition.
