Salzburg erect bridges to enhance Onguéné’s return

Austrian Bundesliga giants Red Bull Salzburg have opened serious negotiations to secure the return of legendary defender Jerome Junior Onguéné from German side Eintranch Frankfurt.

The move is reported across the board in Germany and beyond less than six months after Onguéné ended a five-year stay at Salzburg by switching to Frankfurt.

Unfortunately for both parties, the move to Germany failed to deliver the expected as the center-back didn’t get to kick a ball in a competitive game.

Loved by many at the Bull Arena, where he won four league and cup doubles, Onguéné returns as a proven sweeper – expected to quick-fix their defensive woes this term.

The former France Youth international who pledged his allegiance to Cameroon and won his first senior international cap in October 2018 against Malawi is expected to get more game time at Salzburg.

The 2016 European Youth championship winner as a key player for France was part of the AFCON 2021 squad picked by Antonio Conceicao early last year. The versatile defender helped Cameroon to a third place finish during the tournament, but failed to make the cut for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

A return to the Austrian Bundesliga is a near assurance of more minutes and consequently greater chances of returning to the Lions den to add to his ten international caps.
