The countdown clock for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) hit the one-year-to-go mark on October 31,2025, and in a massive victory for African sport, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye stepped up to the plate to unveil the official mascot, « AYO », a vibrant young lion set to be the face of Africa’s first Olympic event.
The reveal, held before a packed house at the Grand Théâtre National de Dakar, was a true showstopper, marking the official kickoff for the final drive towards the games. With Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko and International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Kirsty Coventry in attendance.
Ayo, whose name means “joy” in the Nigerian Yoruba language, is a carefully crafted symbol of the continent’s youth, pride, and rich diversity.
The smiling lion sports the traditional Tingandé hat of the Fulani ethnic group and carries the legendary West African Djembe drum. This symbolic kit represents a continent that is dynamic and deeply rooted in its heritage.
The winning design was the creative brainchild of 16-year-old student Ndeye Marieme Diop from Saint-Louis, whose inspiration came from weaving together Senegal’s numerous cultures.
The design was selected from nearly 500 entries submitted by students from 14 regions across the nation, an initiative driven by the Ministry of National Education to ensure the games are truly youth-led.
President Faye stressed that hosting the Dakar YOG is a national priority and a “continental mission for Africa.”
“Senegal carries the hopes of the entire African continent, and we aim to make Africa’s voice heard more clearly on the international stage,” said President Faye. “The Youth Olympic Games are not only a sporting event but also a platform to showcase a confident and rising Africa, a continent that trusts its youth, cherishes sports, and values peace and friendship.”
IOC President Kirsty Coventry echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the mascot’s powerful message.
« Mascot Ayo carries a powerful message of joy and breaks many boundaries, a true symbol of how young and dynamic our continent is. Every day, new opportunities are opening up for Senegal’s youth, and these Games are making that happen,” she remarked.
Slated to run from October 31 to November 13, 2026, across three venues Dakar, Diamnadio, and Saly the Games are expected to bring together approximately 2,700 of the world’s best young athletes aged up to 17.
The sporting calendar is already shaping up to be a full-court press, including a diverse roster with new additions like breaking and wushu making their Olympic debut.
For Senegal, the unveiling of Ayo is the signal to the world. The starting pistol has fired, and the host nation is ready to welcome the world with open arms, true to the slogan, “Africa Welcomes, Dakar Celebrates.”
