Uganda’s Belgian coach Paul Put is set to extend his stay with the Cranes, ending of speculation linking him to the Cameroon national team job currently held by compatriot Marc Brys, kick442.com can exclusively report.

Sources close to the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) have confirmed to kick442.com that Put who is in the last month of his contract will sign a new contract next week, keeping him in charge until AFCON 2027— a deal that will see him guide Uganda through the next two Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments, in 2025 and 2027.

The renewal comes amid reports in recent weeks suggesting that Put was being considered as a possible replacement for Brys, whose relationship with Cameroon’s Football Federation has been strained.

“Everything is already agreed. Paul Put will sign next week,”a FUFA insider told kick442.com.
“He’s not leaving Uganda. The project continues.”

Staying the course

Put’s decision to commit to Uganda marks a significant boost for the Cranes, who have enjoyed a revival under his leadership.

The 68-year-old guided Uganda to qualification for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, their first appearance since 2019, and has built a balanced squad blending youth with experience.

His new contract will also cover Uganda’s participation in the 2027 AFCON, which will be co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania — a symbolic homecoming that FUFA hopes will showcase the progress made under the Belgian’s stewardship.

Cameroon links shut down

Despite growing speculation that he could be a candidate for the Cameroon job, Put’s renewal effectively closes that chapter.

His compatriot Marc Brys, who was appointed by the Cameroon Ministry of Sports last year, remains under pressure following a tense working relationship with the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) and failure to secure a direct qualification ticket for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

While Brys’ future may still be uncertain, Put’s is now clearly defined — firmly anchored in Uganda’s long-term vision.

A proven hand to lead the Cranes at two AFCON tournaments

Paul Put’s experience across Africa gives FUFA confidence. He previously led Burkina Faso to the 2013 AFCON final, earning widespread admiration for turning an underdog side featuring Jonathan Pitroipa and Aristide Bancé into continental finalists.

Since taking over Uganda, his tactical structure and emphasis on discipline have transformed the team’s approach, bringing back belief to a side that had struggled for consistency in recent years.

With his signature set to be inked next week, Paul Put’s focus will now shift to fine-tuning his Cranes squad for AFCON 2025 in Morocco, before turning his sights toward East Africa’s first-ever co-hosted tournament in 2027.

For Uganda, it’s continuity. For Cameroon, it’s uncertainty. For Paul Put, it’s commitment over speculation. So if Brys is going, Cameroon would be condemned to look elsewhere for a replacement.
