Avion Academy of Douala and Fovu Club of Baham have become the first of five clubs to be relegated to the second tier of Cameroon football following results of match day nine of the MTN Elite One championship relegation playoffs obtained in Yaoundé.
Fovu suffered a devastating 3-4 defeat to eternal rivals Astres, courtesy a hat-trick from Jules Armand Kooh while the relegation of Avion Academy who were on standby on the match was confirmed after rivals APEJES of Mfou, Fauve Azur Elite and UMS of Loum recorded positive results.
Avion and Fovu currently top the relegation table of the championship from the bottom with only five points picked up in nine matches so far in the 11-club mini competition.
The relegation of Avion Academy means the Littoral region outfit promoted in 2018 alongside PWD of Bamenda and TKC will be part of the clubs competition in the second tier of Cameroon football next term.
Fovu that graduated into the top-flight in 2019 alongside Fortuna and Aigle Royal returns to the second tier competition again.
Three clubs between Bamboutos FC, Aigle Royal, UMS of Loum, APEJES and even Union Sportive of Douala will join the Avion and Fovu in the descend while Aigle Royal of Moungo and Panthere of Bangante will move up to form part of the 16-club MTN Elite One championship for the 2024/25 season.
The last round of matches to determine the other three clubs to be relegated will be played this Sunday in facilities across the city of Yaoundé. The climax of the competition will mark marathon end of a 28-games campaign through which Victoria United FC unseated Cotonsport of Garoua to land their maiden League title all be it with flashes of controversy around the triumph.
