DR Congo’s international Chancel Mbemba has been awarded the Marc Vivien Foe Award for his massive contributions in Ligue one this season.

With seven goals in 43 appearances for Marseille,The 28-year-old becomes the first defender and the second Congolese to bag home this award after Gaël Kakuta in 2021.

At 207 points,Mbemba outclasses Last year’s winner Seko Fofana of RC Lens , and Nigerian striker Terem Moffi of OGC Nice.

Winning this annual award as the second Marseille player after Andre Ayew in 2015, is a huge achievement for the former Porto player who joined this side just last July.

The Marc Vivien Foe Award is an annual compensation given to the best African player in Ligue one.

A group of about 100 journalists specialising in French and African football choose the winner from a shortlist of 12 players drawn up by the sport departments of FRANCE 24 and RFI

Those eligible are African players who have represented their national team selection and have played at least 15 Ligue 1 over the past season.

In 2018, Cameroons Karl Toko Ekambi was the first Cameroon recipient of this award named after the late Cameroon international Marc Vivien Foe.
