ESwatini and Liberia made light work of their opponents in the first-leg of the first preliminary round of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Wednesday.

ESwatini were 3-0 winners while the Lone Stars of Liberia scored twice without a reply to earn a 2-0 win, results which puts both sides in the driving seat to Morocco.

Justice Figareido rewarded the dominance of the visitors with a 40th minute lead. Sabelo Sikhali Ndzinisa doubled the advantage in added time as Somalia switched off at the back.

Kwakhe Thwala put the game to bed with a third goal ten minutes upon resumption.

Though there were a number of chances to score more goals for the fans at the Ben M’Hamed El Abdi Stadium, it wasn’t to be.

Somalia have an uphill task to qualify when they travel to the Mbombela Stadium in the South African city of Nelspruit for the return on March 26th.

Elsewhere at the Stade de Marrakech, the Lone Stars of Liberia scored two first-half goals through Mohammed Sangare from the penalty spot and Murphy Oscar Dorley ten minutes from the break to seal the first-leg lead.

The victory for ESwatini puts them in a comfortable position return-leg to ensure progress for the group stage of the competition.
