Cameroonian duo Jean Charles Castelletto and Ignatius Ganago of FC Nantes, suffered a heavy 1-5 defeat in the 2023 French Cup final against Toulouse on Saturday, April 29, 2023.

The game that would have seen them win the title for the second season in a row started off on a rough patch, with the Canaries trailing by two goals in the first ten minutes.

Logan Costa gave his side the lead with a header in the fourth minute before finishing up his brace six minutes later in similar fashion.

Thirteen minutes later, Thijs Dallinga will eat his own share of the pie. The striker scored two more goals to leave the scoreline at four nil into the break.

Late into the second half, Ludovic Blas stroke a consolation on the spot for Nantes, with Zakaria Aboukhlal rounding up a perfect finish for Toulouse in the 79th minute. Ignatius Ganago didn’t participate on the game.

Reacting after this excruciating defeat, Jean-Charles Castelletto attributes their failure to the fact that they underestimated their opponents.

“This season, we played against teams much stronger than us, and we were able to cope, recalled the former Brestois. Our plan didn’t work; maybe we saw each other too well. This Toulouse team, we thought it was less strong; perhaps we should have backed down a little more, waited more, done differently,” he explained.

Despite his efforts throughout the 90 minutes of play, the 28-year-old couldn’t do much to keep his team’s dream alive. The defeat is now past, with their objective set on ameliorating their performance moving forward.

“I hope we have understood that today. We are not a good team, and we are not all at the same level. We must quickly get up to speed and seek something else with desire and determination,” he added.

The page for the French Cup has been turned by FC Nantes. Their eyes are now fixed on Ligue 1. Currently placed 16th with 32 points, the team is barely away from the relegation zone. They will face Brest at 8 p.m on Wednesday.
