Ireland W 3-2 Zambia W: Copper Queens falter to fellow World Cup debutant in friendly

World Cup bound Zambia suffered a 3-2 loss to fellow World Cup debutant, Republic of Ireland in an international friendly match on Thursday.

The African side opened the scoring in the 16th minute as an attempt from captain, Barbara Banda iside the box hit Ireland goalie, Courtney Brosnan into the back of the net.

Ireland equalised in the 49th minute from substitute, Amber Barrett who scored from the penalty spot.

Claire O’Riordan gave the Europeans the lead with a header in the 63rd minute.

Barrett second goal of the match in the 73rd minute extended Vera Pauw’s side’s lead.

Madrid CFF forward, Rachael Kundananji in the 79th minute reduced the deficit for Bruce Nwape’s side as Ireland smiled home with a precious win over WAFCON bronze medalist.

Both sides are using the game to prepare for this year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup as Ireland will face Nigeria, Australia, and Canada in Group B.

Zambia will trade tackles with Japan, Spain, and Costa Rica at the group stage of the World Cup.
