Former Elephants of Cote D’Ivoire defender Guy Roland Demel, has likened the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon to the great Spanish football institution Real Madrid CF.

Speaking in a recent interview on Canal+, Demel who won 36 caps for the West African nation between 2004 -2011 and faced Cameroon on a number of occasions showered praises on their eternal rival while pointing out what makes the five-time African champions unique.

“Cameroon’s team creates fear. It’s collective strength and resolute character makes them a little like Real Madrid,” the former Wigan sweeper stated before adding; “Every year fanatics say they are old, they can’t get results, but they are always in the business end of competitions.”

Demel position is understandable as he was part of the Cote D’Ivoire team that suffered a 2-3 defeat in the hands of the Achille Webo inspired Cameroon in the 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifier game in Abidjan. The Ivorian team eventually qualified for the tournament in Germany but kept the scar of result.

Cote D’Ivoire with Demel eliminated Cameroon at the quarter-final of the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations but it needed 12 penalties to separate both nations after goalless from Bonaventure Kalou and Jean II Makoun kept both nations undivided after 120 minutes.

Considered among the best producers of talents on the continent, there is a huge degree of mutual respect between footballers of both nations, surely explaining the former Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund defender’s position.

Demel, 41, also faced Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League thus providing a clear knowledge of Cameroon and Real Madrid as well.
