- Christopher Wooh helped Stade Rennes to a second win in the French Ligue 1 championship this season
- Wooh, Aboubakar Nagida and Enzo Tchato formed the Cameroonian contingent that featured in the game
Christopher Maurice Wooh was at his best at the back as Stade Rennais got back to winning ways with a comfortable 3-0 over Montpellier HSC at Roazhon Park, making it six straight home victories against the same opponent for the first time in Ligue 1 since 2002.
Both Rennes and Montpellier entered the clash reeling from back-to-back defeats. La Paillade, having conceded nine and scored just one over their past two games, sought redemption, while the hosts were looking to recapture the form that saw them thrash Olympique Lyonnais 3-0 on the opening day.
Before long, the home faithful were celebrating, as they added to Montpellier’s dismal defensive record midway through the half.
Ludovic Blas was the architect, breaking the deadlock with a fantastic free-kick from the edge of the box after a short pass, before Rennes were two in front when Arnaud Kalimuendo directed a pinpoint header into the far corner.
Having seen his side ship two goals in the space of ten minutes before the halftime despite dominating possession towards the end, Michel Der Zakarian exited the pitch visibly frustrated.
The visitors had brief joy upon resumption as they thought they pulled one back just minutes into the second half, but Akor Adam’s effort from inside the area was quickly ruled out for an offside in the build-up.
t the other end, Grønbæk, who assisted the opener, turned goalscorer on the hour mark, stunning Benjamin Lecomte between the sticks with a brilliant finish into the bottom corner after cutting through the opposition defence.
While Der Zakarian’s men huffed and puffed in a bid to avoid gifting Rennes a clean sheet victory, the hosts eased to a 10th successive head to head at home without defeat.
In contrast, the defeat is only La Paillade’s second across their last eight top-flight away games, although it is one that pushes them into the drop zone as they remain one of three teams without a win this season.
The result lifts Rennes to the seventh spot on the log with six points from four games while Montpellier remains bottom with just a point to their credit so far after the same number of matches.
In all, three Cameroonians featured in the game; Wooh started and finished it for Rennes while Aboubakar Nagida came on with eight minutes of regulation time left and Enzo Tchato started for Montpellier and was substituted in the second segment.
