Senegal’s 2026 FIFA World Cup preparations are back on track after a late intervention from the country’s presidency helped resolve tensions surrounding head coach Pape Bouna Thiaw’s contractual situation.

The Teranga Lions finally left for the United States in the early hours of Thursday morning following assurances from Senegalese authorities that the coach’s concerns would be addressed after the tournament.

Reports from Senegal indicate that Thiaw had initially refused to travel with the team due to uncertainty surrounding his contract and unpaid salaries. The coach’s deal reportedly expired in February 2026 shortly after he guided Senegal to victory at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Having continued in the role for several months without a renewed agreement, the coach is said to have demanded clarity from both the Senegalese Football Federation and the Ministry of Sports before committing to the World Cup journey.

The disagreement briefly threatened to disrupt Senegal’s departure plans at a crucial stage of preparations, but swift intervention from President Bassirou Diomaye Faye helped calm the situation.

According to local reports, the presidency assured Thiaw that his contractual issues and outstanding salary payments — reportedly estimated at 50 million FCFA per month since February — would be settled after the World Cup.

Those guarantees reportedly convinced the coach to join the squad, allowing the delegation to finally travel to the USA and avoid a deeper crisis on the eve of the tournament.

The development is being viewed in Senegal as an important step toward restoring stability around the national team ahead of the biggest competition in world football.

Despite the administrative tensions, Pape Thiaw remains highly respected for the work he has done with the Teranga Lions since taking over in late 2024.

The former Senegal international guided the team to a second Africa Cup of Nations title in three editions during AFCON 2025, with Senegal completing the tournament unbeaten while earning praise for their defensive organization, discipline and strong team spirit.

Under his leadership, Senegal also maintained its status as Africa’s highest-ranked nation and entered the World Cup year among the top 20 teams in the FIFA rankings.

With the travel issues now resolved, focus within the Senegal camp is expected to shift fully toward football as the Teranga Lions prepare for Group I clashes against France, Norway and Iraq.

Senegal will open its World Cup campaign on June 14, hoping the resolution of the off-field tensions can help the squad approach the tournament with renewed unity and concentration.
