The head coach of the Atlas Lions of Morocco Walid Regragui, has said his side is now focused on winning the 2024 African Nations cup, after their scintillating run at the 2022 FIFA World cup.
47-year-old Walid Regragui led Morocco to a record breaking world cup, barely three months in charge of the Atlas Lions, after he took over from Vahid Halilhodzic. Morocco became the first African country to reach the semifinals of a world cup, and eventually finishing fourth, after their 2#1 defeat to Croatia on Saturday in the classification game.
Morocco’s new found form under Regragui, has impressed many football analysts, with their compact playing style. With the 2023 AFCON schedule to take place in Ivory coast in January 2024, Regragui is now focused on ending Morocco’s 46_year_old AFCON barren run.
“Now we will focus on winning the African Cup in 2024,” Walid Regragui said after Morocco’s defeat to Croatia on Saturday.
“I told my players that we cannot be kings of the world without first being kings of our continent,” he added.
Morocco was Eliminated at the quarter finals of the last edition of the AFCON in Cameroon 2021, by Egypt. The last time the Atlas Lions won the AFCON was in 1976, and lost to Tunisia in the 2004 finals.
Morocco won four of their seven world cup games, recording one draw and two defeats, and keeping four clean sheets.
Walid Regragui will hope to find the same motivation to boast his team, in their AFCON qualifiers where they currently top Group K with six points.
