There is more than promotion at stake when Apejes de Mfou and AS Fortuna de Mfou meet on Wednesday in the MTN Elite One promotion/relegation playoff. For two clubs separated by little more than geography, the match is about history, pride and unfinished business.

The Cameroon Transitional Council for Professional Football (CTFP) has confirmed that the decisive playoff will take place on 1 July 2026 at the Annexe 1 Stadium of the Yaoundé Omnisports Complex, with kick-off set for 3:30 p.m. The winner will play in the 2026/27 MTN Elite One, while the loser will compete in Elite Two next season.

It is the latest chapter in one of Cameroon’s most intriguing local rivalries. The Mfou derby reunites two clubs that spent more than a decade locking horns in the top flight before Apejes’ relegation three years ago.

Apejes earned another shot at Elite One after finishing second in the 2025/26 MTN Elite Two, behind champions Union Sportive of Abong-Mbang, who secured automatic promotion. Fortuna, meanwhile, find themselves fighting for survival after ending the Elite One season in the relegation playoff spot.

The fixture also reopens old wounds. Many Apejes supporters remain convinced that their club’s relegation three years ago was sealed when Fortuna refused to settle for a result that could have helped both sides. Instead, Fortuna claimed victory, condemning their neighbours to the second tier. That result has fuelled resentment ever since, ensuring Wednesday’s encounter carries an emotional edge beyond the significance of promotion.

Yet the derby is about far more than rivalry. It is also a meeting of two of Cameroon’s greatest talent developers. Between them, Apejes and Fortuna have played a pivotal role in producing players who have gone on to represent the Indomitable Lions and build successful professional careers.

Current Cameroon star André-Frank Zambo Anguissa, midfield general Samuel Oum Gouet, winger Serge Tabekou, and striker John Mary are among the notable names to have passed through the two Mfou clubs. Their contribution to talent development has made both institutions respected far beyond their hometown.

On Wednesday, the focus will return to the pitch. But whatever the outcome, the match represents more than a playoff—it is a reunion of two historic rivals, a battle for local bragging rights, and a showcase of clubs that have left a lasting imprint on Cameroonian football.
