Giovanni Wanneh has hailed the new FIFA data collection process as a triumph after overseeing Cameroon’s final match on Monday, October 13th. The system, designed to gather and verify real-time match data with referees before sending it to FIFA, posed a demanding challenge — one that Wanneh executed flawlessly.

“I worked with elite referees like Algeria’s Ghorbal Mustapha, Benin’s Louis Houngnandande, and Tewodros Mitiku. What struck me about them — and the match commissioners — is their sheer professionalism,” Wanneh told kick442.com.

Beyond FIFA, Wanneh’s journey in sports journalism has been remarkable. Now serving as Director of Publications at SportGlitz, he has spent over nine years building a career marked by versatility and resilience. His portfolio spans the African Women’s Volleyball Championship, Afrobasket, multiple AFCON tournaments, African club competitions, and the African Handball Championship. He has also been a regular panellist on the Francis Ngannou Challenge.

Wanneh began his career at Revival Gospel Radio in 2015-2016, transforming the station into a sports hub with the flagship program, Week-End Sports. “I owe a lot to Mbuye Basil, who gave me my first break,” he recalls. Together with Chigozie Christopher, Wanneh built a reputation that caught the attention of Angu Lesley, CEO of kick442.com, who brought him on board to promote local football content.

His career path took him to MySoccer24, where he collaborated with Afeseh Apong, and later ventured into television, joining programs like STV’s La Presse Refait le Match with John Paul Sama and Sports Club alongside Jean Cyriac Besse, Lawrence Nkede, and Simon Lyonga. “I rarely have friends my age in this field. These men are elder brothers who constantly push me to grow,” he says.

Radio remains close to his heart. At Dream FM, Wanneh served as a correspondent and sports producer, nurturing young talents including Ezia Ramsey, Muambo Edwards, and Ndoumbe Jemea. His professional network extends globally, with appearances on CNN, BBC, Al Jazeera, SuperSport, and The Athletic.

In football management, Wanneh has worked with Murum Divine’s Africa Sports Management, preparing teams ahead of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, and contributed to The Isle of Hope Sports Academy’s success in Cameroon’s Elite Two Championship during the 2022-2023 season.

Looking forward, Wanneh promises innovation in sports journalism: “In the weeks ahead, my partners and I will introduce something new to the South West that will redefine how sports reporting is done.”

He remains inspired by the next generation: “Seeing talents like Nsonyi Armstrong, Kosibom Joshua, and Steve Jordan assures me that young reporters are ready to carry the torch.”

With experience spanning radio, television, global media, and football management, Giovanni Wanneh is more than a rising star — he is a bridge between Cameroon’s sports heritage and its future.
