Morocco’s remarkable journey at the FIFA U-20 World Cup rolled on as the young Atlas Lions defeated the United States 3–1 to reach the semi-finals for the first time in their history.
Led by influential captain Othmane Maamma of Watford, the African vice-champions produced a commanding performance that combined tactical discipline with ruthless efficiency — adding the USA to a growing list of fallen giants that already includes Spain and Brazil.
Maamma magic sparks Morocco ahead
Morocco drew first blood after 31 minutes when Maamma showed composure and vision to set up Yassir Zabiri, who finished confidently past the American goalkeeper to give the North Africans a deserved lead.
But the USA hit back on the stroke of half-time. A moment of misjudgment in Morocco’s box saw Caleb Campbell step up to convert from the penalty spot, levelling the contest at 1–1 as both sides headed into the break.
Fortune favours the brave
Morocco regained control early in the second half, continuing to press with intensity and purpose. Their persistence paid off when American defender Joshua Wynder turned the ball into his own net under pressure, restoring Morocco’s advantage and reigniting their momentum.
With the United States pushing forward in search of another equaliser, the Atlas Cubs struck again in the 87th minute. Substitute Gesdime Yassine latched onto a loose ball at the edge of the box and fired home emphatically to seal a famous 3–1 victory.
A continent celebrates
At full time, Moroccan players celebrated wildly — knowing they had just made history. The North Africans are now the only remaining African side in the competition, proudly carrying the continent’s hopes into the final four.
“We’ve worked for moments like this,” said captain Maamma. “We’ve beaten Spain, Brazil and now the USA. We’re not afraid of anyone — we want to make Morocco and Africa proud.”
Next stop: France or Norway
Morocco will now face the winner between France and Norway in the semi-finals — a chance to extend their fairytale run and edge closer to the ultimate prize.
