Cameroonian champions Lékié Football Filles suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns in their second Group A fixture of the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League in Egypt on Wednesday.
Lékié went into the encounter hoping to build on their opening-day campaign and strengthen their chances of progressing to the knockout stages. However, they faced a formidable Sundowns side whose experience at this level once again proved decisive.
The South Africans broke the deadlock in the 42nd minute through Refilwe Tholaleke, giving Sundowns a 1-0 advantage heading into the interval. Lékié were subsequently forced to chase the game against opponents who have established themselves among the continent’s leading forces in women’s football.
The decisive moment arrived in the 84th minute when Ivana Makana’s own goal doubled Sundowns’ advantage. Lékié refused to surrender, though, and Tim Shalom pulled one back in the same minute to give the Cameroonian side renewed hope. Despite their late response, Lékié could not find an equaliser before the final whistle.
The 2-1 defeat represents another difficult examination for Stéphane Ndzana’s side in their maiden CAF Women’s Champions League campaign. While the result is disappointing, Lékié demonstrated fighting spirit by continuing to compete until the closing stages against one of Africa’s most experienced women’s clubs. Their attention will now turn to their final Group A assignment against Egyptian side FC Masar, where they will be hoping to finish their historic continental adventure on a positive note.
