  • Portuguese tactician Pedro Goncalves has decided to end his tenure as Angola’s coach , following their Quarter final loss to Nigeria
  • The 47-year old whose contract ends this 2024 has declined renewal
  • Goncalves has authored a glorious chapter of Angolan football history, leading teams from the junior to the senior level in his decade-long tenure.

Pedro Goncalves has resigned as coach of the palanca Negra of Angola after losing to Nigeria in the AFCON quarter-finals. The Portuguese tactician, who had been in charge since 2019 , turned down a contract renewal offer .

Kick442 exclusively learned that the 47-year-old coach will leave the team after the Nigeria match.

Goncalves led Angola to their best-ever performance at the AFCON, topping Group D with seven points and two wins, and reaching the quarter-finals for the first time since 2010.

However, his dream of lifting the continental trophy was shattered by Nigeria, who defeated Angola 1-0 at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny. The Super Eagles scored late in the first half through Ademola Lookman, and kept a clean sheet for the third consecutive game.

Despite this setback, Pedro is considered the second best coach in the history of the Angolan national teams.

He started his journey with Angola by leading the U-17 team to the World Cup in Brazil in 2019, for the first time in the country’s history. He achieved this feat after winning the COSAFA U17 Cup, the regional tournament for Southern Africa, and qualifying for the African U17 Championship.

A month before the World Cup, Goncalves was offered the opportunity to take over the senior team, which he accepted. He has managed to implement a set of processes that has enabled Angola to compete in big continental competitions, such as the African Nations Championship (CHAN) and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Goncalves had already revealed his intention to go back to Portugal in a flash interview before the AFCON. He said it was one of his plans after his Angola stint.
