The coach of Nigeria’s senior men’s national team, Jose Peseiro congratulated his players after a 1-0 win over Angola in the quarter-final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Abidjan on Friday.

A goal by Ademola Lookman sealed the win for the Super Eagles in the first half.

Angola put up a good display but were unable to break a strong Nigeria defence which has conceded a goal in five games.

“We created more chances in the first half to dominate the opponents. It was a better match in terms of organisation. In the second half, we could create more counterattacks because Angola tried to put more people in front and more attackers. In the end, congratulations to my players. I am happy. Congratulations to Angola. They did fantastic,” Peseiro told journalists during the post-match conference.

“Our opponents created chances and hit the post in the second half. It represents the quality this team (Angola) did reach the quarter-final.

“We last beat them at CHAN in extra time 2-1. Angola is a good team.”

Nigeria goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali kept another clean sheet which was his fourth straight ending a 44-year record and becoming the first goalkeeper to keep four straight clean sheets at major tournaments.

“I think Stanley Nwabali did two good saves. My team played well in the first half. In the second half, we lose two goals in the middle

“In the second half, I called Alex Iwobi and Frank Onyeka about tiredness but they both said they were not tired. We had to remove Onyeka in the second half. I know all the players want to play till the final.

“It’s not easy playing full back in this system because they must go forward and come back to defend.” He concluded.
