The Cameroon Football Federation FECAFOOT, has announced that the salaries of female footballers plying their trade in the Guinness Super League, will be reduced by 50 percent.

Salaries of players in the Cameroon professional leagues, were increased in July this year on the intention to improve players welfare, with the minimum salary per player in the Guinness Super League set as 100,000FCFA, a 50 percent increase from the initial 50,000FCFA that was previously paid directly to the players by the League’s sponsors, Guiness Cameroon.

But Now, the Cameroon Football Federation through its Secretary General Blaise Djounang, have announced that the salaries of players in the Guinness Super League, will go back to the 50,000FCFA minimum, as was the case before.

“We have the honor to inform you that at the end of an emergency committee meeting on August 08, 2022, resolution No. 12 of the emergency committee of July 06, 2022 concerning the salary of players of the professional championships, was particularly modified by resolution N°4 bringing said salaries initially planned from 100,000 (one hundred thousand) FCFA to 50,000 (fifty thousand) FCFA for players of the Guinness Super League,” Blaise Djounang explained in a communiqué dated December 23, 2022, addressed to the Commission in charge of players statute.

“The rest unchanged. Please take note of it and take it into account during the process of processing the files that will be submitted to you,” he added.

According to our sources, Guinness Cameroon the top sponsor was supposed to pay 50 percent and the FA pays the rest. Guinness however has not made any adjustments meaning the FA is backing out from their own commitment.

It’s unclear how this situation will be handled at the level of the clubs given that most players had negotiated and signed their contracts with a minimum salary of 100,000FCFA.

The Guinness Super League is expected to kick-off in January for the 2022_2023 season, as 12 clubs will battle for who succeeds AS AWA FC as champions.
