Morocco has become the first nation to qualify for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote D’Ivoire outside the host.

The Atlas Lions clinched their qualification for the 24-nations tournament following the 2-2 draw between Group K rivals South Africa and Liberia on Friday 24 March 2023 at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto, South Africa.

Bafana Bafana and the Leone Stars secured a point each for the first time in three qualifier outings.

Morocco, on standby this FIFA window due to the absence of suspended Zimbabwe, leads the group with six points from their opening two games.

The 1976 AFCON champions have a five-point advantage over Liberia and South Africa with two qualifier matches left for both nations.

1996 winners, South Africa, will face Liberia in their next game on Tuesday and close it in June against Morocco.

Liberia face Morocco in the last qualifier fixture in September. The 2004 runners-up are through to the finals courtesy of the fact that non of the teams occupying second and third spots can surpass their present tally of six points.

Liberia and South Africa will battle for the remaining spot from the Group.

Walid Regragui’s Morocco enter their 19th AFCON tournament next year in Cote D’Ivoire hoping to end a long wait for a second continental crown.
