- Cameroon wins the first leg match staged at the Réunification stadium in Douala.
- Manbolamo scored the lone winning goal for the Lionesses
- Hambaree Starlets start on bad footing, await Cameroon in Nairobi for the return leg clash
The Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon have picked up a slim 1-0 win over Kenya in the first leg African women’s cup of nations qualifying tie.
IManbolamo Eliane scored the lone goal for the Indomitable Lionesses nine minutes into the game – her second international goal.
The 1-0 lead separated both sides for the break as the Lionesses failed the rest of the opportunities in front of goal and Kenya equally failed to convert their chances to get the equalizer.
Cameroon’s midfield was noticeable thanks to the efforts of Ngock Monique considered by a majority to be the most engaged player in this encounter for team Cameroon. Unarguably, she contributed a bunch to Cameroon’s win.
The early minutes of the last half still remained futile with Aboudi Onguene and Nga Manga wasteful, forcing coach Jean Baptiste bring in Tabe Brenda, Ngo Mbeleck and Ajara Njoya who changed the phase of the game.
The Hamrabee Starlets threatened to change the score line in the second segment, that was very visible late into this half of the game, unfortunately Mayi Kith did an applaudable work at the back line to stop their attempts at goal.
Micheala Abam had an engaging second half but squandered a lot of chances sent to her from the back to send it. A glaring chance was when captain Onguene sent a swift and smart pass to Micheala who played central attack position, sent the ball over the bar.
The early lead cost the game for the Kenyans who couldn’t believe they didn’t get anything to show for at the end of the final blast. Though their attack line made efforts to get the equalizer especially Tereza Engesha, Cameroon’s steady backline frustrated their efforts.
Kenya host Cameroon in the return-leg clash on Tuesday, September 26 at the Nyaro National stadium.
The aggregate winner of the two-leg tie will meet the winner between Gabon and Botswana in the second round later this year. Botswana won 4-1 away in Gabon today.
