Angola’s Petro Atlético produced a remarkable comeback to secure their place in the 2026/27 CAF Champions League group stage, beating Zimbabwean champions Scottland FC 3-0 in the second leg of their second preliminary-round tie on Friday, October 23. Trailing 2-0 from the first leg, Petro overturned the deficit to claim a dramatic 3-2 aggregate victory at the Estádio 11 de Novembro in Luanda.

Petro entered the return fixture under pressure after suffering a surprise 2-0 defeat in Harare, where former Zimbabwe internationals Khama Billiat and Knowledge Musona had put Scottland in a strong position. The Angolan giants needed a determined response on home soil, and they immediately took the initiative in front of their supporters.

Rúben opened the scoring in the 18th minute to give Petro hope of completing the turnaround. However, Scottland held firm for the remainder of the first half, maintaining their aggregate advantage and leaving the hosts with more work to do after the interval.

Petro intensified their attacking efforts in the second half, and Jorge Pereira brought the aggregate score level with a goal in the 67th minute. With qualification hanging in the balance, Pedro Aparício delivered the decisive blow in the 85th minute, completing the comeback and sending the home supporters into celebration. Scottland could not find a response as Petro held on to secure their passage into the group stage.

The result represents a significant achievement for Petro Atlético, who have preserved their ambitions of competing for Africa’s biggest club prize. For Scottland FC, the defeat ends a memorable continental campaign after their impressive first-leg performance had raised hopes of reaching the group stage. Petro now turn their attention to the next phase of the competition, while the Zimbabwean champions return home to reflect on a painful elimination after coming so close to a historic qualification.
