Cape Verde senior men’s national team caused the first major upset of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a 2-1 stunning victory over four-time winners, Ghana at the Stade Felix Houphouet Boigny, Abidjan, on Sunday.

The island country took the lead in the 17th minute thanks to Jamiro Monteiro’s goal.

The goal activated a panic button on the Ghanaian side which put all foot forward in search of the equaliser despite a goal being ruled out for an offside.

Alexandra Djiku leveled the scoreline six minutes into the second period.

When the game seemed destined for a draw, the Blue Sharks got the winner in the additional minutes of the second half.

It was Garry Rodrigues’s last-gasp goal that sealed a 2-1 win.

Cape Verde moved to the top of Group B with three points, two points ahead of Egypt and Mozambique which played out a 2-2 draw.

Mostafa Mohamed broke the deadlock for the Pharaohs with Mohamed Salah’s assist in the second minute of play.

Two goals in three second-half minutes gave Cape Verde a 2-1 lead before the late drama.

Salah had the chance to equalise for the North African side which he did to ensure that the game ended in a 2-2 draw.
