As football fans prepare for the last set of group games at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire, the coach of Guinea Bissau, Baciro Cande is not giving up on the team’s quest to pick their first win of the tournament.

It has not been a palatable tournament for the Djurtus after two losses to Cote d’Ivoire (2-0) and Equatorial Guinea (4-2) and have to play for pride as the team’s destiny is not in their hands with slim chance of making it out of the group via best third placed finish.

Cande is confident his team can turn their destiny around for good against the Super Eagles on Monday.

“I trust my team. We had good qualification performance. Mentally we are strong. If we are here, it means we worth to be here,” Cande told journalists during the pre-match press conference in Abidjan on Sunday.

“We know that football is what it is but we will try to get a good result tomorrow (Monday).”

The Djurtus have not made it out of the group stage in their past three AFCON appearances in 2017, 2019, and 2021.

“We are excited to play a good tournament. We still have a match to end this tournament. We know that it will be difficult but everything is possible,” he continued.

“I do believe everything is possible. We have a lot of surprises in football. We believe in our strength. We have an objective which is to win points after this match. Physically, we will be ready tomorrow to face a strong Nigerian side.” He concluded.
