Cameroon’s U-17 Lions booked their place in the quarter-finals of the TotalEnergies CAF U-17 AFCON Morocco 2026 and qualified for the FIFA U-17 World Cup after defeating DR Congo 1-0 in their final Group B outing on Tuesday.

In a tense and highly competitive encounter, the Young Lions showed resilience and maturity to overcome a determined Congolese side. With qualification on the line, both teams battled for control during a cagey first half that produced few clear-cut opportunities.

Just when the game appeared destined to go into the break goalless, Omar Amir Tsombeng emerged as the hero for the Young Lions, finding the back of the net in the 45+6th minute to hand Cameroon a crucial lead. The forward finished calmly after a well-worked attacking move, sparking celebrations among the Cameroonian players and technical bench.

DR Congo responded strongly after the restart and pushed for an equaliser, but Cameroon’s defence stood firm under pressure. The Young Lions remained compact and disciplined, frustrating their opponents while protecting their slender advantage until the final whistle.

Midfielder George Essingila Mbinde of Best Stars Academy of Limbe was named Man of the Match after an impressive display in the heart of midfield. The youngster played a vital role in Cameroon’s victory with his energy, ball recovery and composure throughout the encounter.

The victory marks a major achievement for Cameroon, who return to the FIFA U-17 World Cup for the first time in seven years. The Young Lions also advance to the quarter-finals of the continental competition, where they are set to face hosts Morocco in what promises to be a blockbuster clash.
