Cameroonian coach and former international George Elokobi will step down as manager of Maidstone United at the end of the season, bringing the curtain down on an extraordinary journey that has seen him serve the club as player, captain and manager.
The 38-year-old will depart upon the expiry of his contract, with Maidstone currently battling for a place in the National League South play-offs. Despite the club expressing a desire to keep him, financial constraints have ultimately made his exit unavoidable.
Elokobi’s association with Maidstone dates back to 2019 when he joined as a player before transitioning into a player-coach role and later taking charge of the first team in 2023. Under his leadership, the club enjoyed one of the most memorable periods in its history, including a stunning run in the FA Cup where they reached the fifth round—becoming the lowest-ranked side to do so in decades.
His impact extended beyond results. A natural leader, Elokobi helped guide Maidstone to the National League South title in 2022 as a player, before inspiring belief and resilience within the squad as manager.
Born in Mamfe, Cameroon, Elokobi’s journey to English football is a story of resilience. A former student of St. Joseph’s College Sasse, he moved to England at the age of 16 to pursue both education and football.
He began his career in non-league football with Dulwich Hamlet before rising through the ranks at Colchester United, earning a move to Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2008. At Wolves, he featured prominently as the club gained promotion to the Premier League, going on to make over 80 appearances and establishing himself as a dependable defender at the highest level.
Elokobi also earned call-ups to the Cameroon national team, further cementing his status as one of the country’s exports to top-flight European football.
After spells with clubs including Nottingham Forest, Bristol City, Oldham Athletic and Leyton Orient, he eventually found a home at Maidstone, where he seamlessly transitioned into coaching following his retirement in 2022.
His departure marks the end of a significant chapter not just for Maidstone United, but for a figure widely respected for his leadership, humility and deep connection to the game.
With his experience—ranging from grassroots football to the Premier League and now management—Elokobi is expected to attract interest as he prepares for the next step in his coaching career.
