Mouthwatering fixtures set for AFCON 2023 knockout stage

With the conclusion of the group stage of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), all is now set for the first knockout stage of the competition.

16 teams from the 24 that started the tournament made it to the Round of 16.

They are Equatorial Guinea, Nigeria, Cote D’Ivoire, Cape Verde, Egypt, Senegal, Cameroon, Mauritania, Guinea, Angola, Namibia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Morocco, South Africa, Mali, and Burkina Faso.

One of the highly anticipated matches of the knockout stage is the clash between Cameroon and Nigeria at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium, Abidjan.

The same stadium hosted the final of the 1984 AFCON where Cameroon claimed the title.

Group A winners, Equatorial Guinea continue their quest to win their first AFCON medal against another tough side in Guinea.

Group B leaders, Cape Verde which is one of the surprise teams of the tournament so far trade tackles with another surprise package, Mauritania.

Another group winner Angola will face Namibia with the winner set to battle either Nigeria or Cameroon in the quarter-final.

Egypt and the Democratic Republic of Congo will settle scores while 2022 FIFA World Cup semi-finalists, Morocco and South Africa set up another tight contest.

After getting a second chance qualification via the best third placed finish, hosts, Cote D’Ivoire have another tough test against holders Senegal.

Mali against Burkina Faso concludes the Round of 16 pairings which will get underway on Saturday, January 27, 2024, after a two-day break.
