Angola coach Patrice Beaumelle has praised his players for what he called a “man’s match” after holding Cameroon to a goalless draw in Yaoundé in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Beaumelle, who took charge of the Palancas Negras barely two weeks ago, expressed delight at the commitment and discipline of his side, which stood firm against one of Africa’s football giants.
“I’m very satisfied with my players. It was a man’s match,” Beaumelle told reporters. “With only four or five training sessions, they managed to deliver an exceptional performance on the pitch.”
A Remarkable Feat for a New-Look Team
Appointed on 29 September 2025, the French coach faced the daunting task of assembling and preparing his team in record time. Yet, the outcome in Yaoundé suggested a group already buying into his philosophy.
The result was a major morale boost for Angola, who are also preparing for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, starting on 21 December.
Marques the Wall at 39
While Beaumelle applauded his entire squad, he reserved special praise for Hugo Marques, the 39-year-old goalkeeper whose inspired display earned him the Man of the Match award.
Marques produced four crucial saves, denying Cameroon’s forwards on multiple occasions to preserve Angola’s clean sheet.
“I congratulate the Palancas Negras, but above all, I must congratulate Hugo Marques,” Beaumelle said. “He had a big game today. At 39, he showed his experience and class once again.”
Angola Making a Statement
The performance reinforced Angola’s growing reputation as a competitive and disciplined side capable of frustrating top African teams. Under Beaumelle, the Palancas Negras appear ready to challenge on multiple fronts as they look toward both the World Cup qualifiers and the upcoming AFCON.
