Former Lions’ coach Ikouam passes on

Former Indomitable and Intermediate Lions of Cameroon coach Fils Gweha Ikouam has died in Yaoundé after a car crash aged 61.

The former Under-20 Lions coach was found dead inside his car in the early hours of Saturday, January 21. Sources say the former home based national team supervisor had knocked down someone and drove off the scene, bike riders chased him and he hit a wall which amounted to his death.

Born in Douala in April 1961, Gweha when through the famous national institute of youth and sports were he had his certification as a coach.

He thrived in multiple editions of the University games back then before becoming a top notch first division championship trainer back then with Dragon FC of Douala and Dynamo of the same city, Pouma FC in the second tier and Vent de Douala in a division lower.

Ikouam also managed Kumbo Strikers, Unisport of Bafang, Prévoyance of Yaoundé and Tonerre Kalara Club.

The CAF license A holder served the nation as deputy coach of the Indomitable Lions between 1994 to 1996 before switching to the role of the head coach of the U-20 team.

While in his role as coach of the Junior Lions Gweha was co-opted into a penal of experts to scout opponents in Cameroon’s glory campaign in the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in 2000.

He left the national team environment for a while but returned for a two-year stint in 2007 as deputy coach of the Indomitable Lions.

Gweha’s last job in the national team was the supervisor role for the Intermediate Lions during the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2020 tournament less two years ago.

Besides coaching he was technical director of the Astres team that finished runners-up to Cotonsport in 2011 and Technical Director of the Mount Cameroon FC of Buea team that won the cup of Cameroon in 2002.

Coach Ikouam as he was popularly called also served as consultant for different institutions.

The man who played a key role in putting together Cameroon’s golden generation of the 2000s leaves behind a wife, five children and the football family to mourn him.
