While fans and ardent footballers of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) saw a packed Alassane Ouattara Stadium for the opening match between host, Cote D’Ivoire and Guinea Bissau, it was expected that the attendance could only be outweighed by that of the final match.

Alas on Thursday, the Group A crunch encounter between the Elephants and Super Eagles chattered the opening match attendance record.

36,858 spectators watched Cote D’Ivoire beat Guinea Bissau 2-0 in the opening match of AFCON 2023.

The game between Cote D’Ivoire and Nigeria broke the tournament attendance record with 49,517 people in the 60,012-capacity Stadium.

The game ended 1-0 in favour of the three-time African champions.

William Troost Ekong’s second-half penalty separated both sides.

With more games ahead, it is expected that more people will throng stadia to improve the attendance record.
