Alioum Saidou, the lead trainer of Cameroon’s intermediate Lions has picked a strong side to travel to Tunisia and continue preparations for the 2022 African Nations championship which gets underway in under a fortnight.

Coach Alioum had the last training session with the 30-man squad this Monday. After the session, he informed the players and the federation about those to be on the plane to Tunisia for the rest of the preparations and warm up matches against Uganda and Sudan.

2022 FIFA World Cup instant hit Jerome Ngom Mbeleki who came on and provided an assist in the win against Brazil spearhead the squad as one of the defenders, though the Colombe of Dja man can also operate as a Winger.

Ngom, 24, is one of 20 potential debutants in the squad alongside rising star Che Malone Fondoh Junior who has been outstanding for Cotonsport in the past 12 months.

Che likened to legendary sweeper Rigobert Song and Ngom are joined by six other defenders among which is expected skipper Yves Alain Dooh Moukoko of Canon of Yaounde plus Bamboutos FC star sweep Tchami Donatien named after ex-international Tchami Alphonse.

Alioum has recalled the experience of Etta Bawak Thomas of PWD of Bamenda who was dropped days before CHAN 2016 and 2020, but skippered Cameroon against Angola during the 2018 tournament.

There’s no survivor in defense from the last edition of the tournament just like in the goalkeeping department which has Canon’s Mbaynassem Jourdain, Mbahbi Marcelin and Patrick Kibyen Leonel of Gazelle FA and Bamboutos FC of Mbouda respectively.

In midfield, Apejes’ Zemba Ikoung and Valentine Beo Batto of Colombe returned to the competition they featured in during the 2016 and 2020 editions respectively.

They are accompanied by Cotonsport sensation Kaiba Djawal who scored seven and assisted six last season in all competitions for the league and cup winners.

In addition to Kaiba, there is a place for Eding Sport de la Lekie duo Sime Prince Junior and Louis Mbah who are accompanied by Union Sportive of Douala pair Iyendjock Joseph and Joel Paten. Arthur Mvom of Fauve Azur Elite complete the midfield options as one of two players from his club. The other is defender Ibrahim Saidou.

There’s no Marou Souaibou in attack. The former Cotonsport forward has is finalizing his switch abroad and so miss the tournament reserved for home based players, just like Anye Fru Derick of Maritzburg United and Felix Oukine who joined Belgian third-tier side Raal last week.

Union Sportive duo Roche Foning and Guy Eyike are in among the forwards, alongside Ramses Donfack of Cotonsport, Eding’s Harrison Ford Djonkep plus Fovu lead scorer Emmanuel Franck Beken and 2021 Elite One top scorer Junior Kemajou.

Team Cameroon jet to Tunis on Tuesday for a ten days camp after which they will travel to Oran via Algiers.

Cameroon in group E will confront Congo Republic on January 16 before facing Niger Republic eight days in the group stage of their fifth appearance in the African Nations championship.

Finishing fourth on home soil in 2021 should inspire Ibrahim Abba and the rest of this generation of players to do even more.
