Cameroon’s Olympic Hope hangs on a thread As Soppi, Eseme and Co. enter competition

Team Cameroon remains in contention for Olympic medals, with four athletes still competing at the 2024 Games.

Anita Soppi Mbella in the +78 kg judo event, Mabelo Nguelo in women’s 50m freestyle swimming, Emmanuel Eseme in the men’s 100m and Linda Angounou in the women’s 400 m Hurdle.

Richelle Anita Soppi Mbella will face off against Akira Sone of Japan in the opening round of the women’s +78 kg judo on August 2,2024

The Cameroonian Judoka will be eager to make her mark on her debut Olympic stage. She has been steadily rising through the ranks, showcasing her skills and determination on the international circuit.

The 34-year-old is classified as top four in her category just below french legend Teddy Riner. She has swept four gold medals this year in numerous competitions

The reigning African champion, will have her hands full against Sone, a two-time World Champion and gold medalist at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Sone’s mastery of techniques like Tai Otoshi and Ouchi Gari has made her a dominant force in the heavyweight division.

This clash between Soppi Mbella and Sone promises to be a thrilling display of athleticism, technique, and mental fortitude. Both athletes will leave everything on the mat as they strive to advance in the competition. The winner will meet XU Shiyan from China

In sprint, Africa’s second best sprinter in the 100m Emmanuel Eseme will go against 55 other world champions. Set to run on Saturday August 3, Eseme like all the others will take part in the preliminary round with the top athletes to advance to the semi finals

The 30-year-old who failed to make it out of heat two in the men’s 200m back in Tokyo hopes to impress in Paris. Since that competition he has gone to win the African games, winning silver and bronze in the men’s 100m and 200m sprint at the 2024 African athletics championship , bronze at the 2023 diamond league just to name a few.

With a personal best of 9.96 obtained on July 2,2023 in Switzerland, the fastest man at the 2023 all African games face great competition from three times world gold medallist Noah Lyles from the United States, Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson, World silver medallist from Botswana Letsile Tebogo and the man with the fastest time in the world this year Ferdinand Omanyala from Kenya with 9.79.

The women’s 400 m hurdle will unfold between August 4-8 at stade the France with a total of 40 competitors including Cameroon’s Linda Angounou. The 31-year-old has progressed over time , from a fourth place run Mauritius in 2022, to winning bronze in Konya Turkey and then silver in Kinshasa on August 2023. She currently holds the national record in 400m hurdles with 55.94 seconds

Her competitors are Sydney McLaughlin Levrone from the United States with a record time of 50.65 seconds, Nezha Bidouane from Morocco just to name a few.

In the women’s 50m freestyle, Mabelo Nguelo gets to compete on August 3 at the Olympic aquatics center at Paris LA defense arena . The lone competitor in this event after Giorgio Armani’s elimination, the swimmer needs to be amongst the top eight with the best time to qualify for the finals.

This will be a challenging yet possible task to accomplish.
