Cameroon-born French football Referee Gaël Angoula has been promoted to the ranks of Ligue 1 officials for the 2023/24 season.
Angoula, who was once close to a call up to the Cameroon national team as a defender earned the promotion by dint of hard-work and brilliant performances last season in the Ligue 2 championship. He joins elite officials like Stephanie Frappart and Clement Turpin in the big time next season.
The 40-year-old is listed amongst 20 Referees retained for next season’s Ligue 1 championship.
Angoula, who was born in Le Havre to Cameroonian parents began his career as a player and played for six clubs in a 13-year period before switching to Refereeing in 2017.
The National and French Ligue 2 winner with Bastia back in the days has done well in his new profession. This explains his steady rise to the summit of officiating in the country noted for producing top notch officials.
