Burkina Faso dismiss entire technical staff

Burkina Faso have decided not to renew the contract of coach Hubert Velud and his entire technical staff after their Africa Cup of Nations last-16 exit, the country’s football federation said on Friday.

The decision is contained in a Press Release made public by the Burkinabe Football Federation.

In the Press Release, the federation appreciated the government, partners, supporters and the sporting public for the support they gave the team during the tournament.

The Burkinabe Football Federation Executive Committee noted that their performance at the tournament goes against their objectives reason why they decided to terminate the contract of the coach and the entire technical staff.

Burkina Faso were eliminated by Mali in the round of 16, having finished second in their group behind Angola but ahead of top seeded Algeria.

The federation announced that as the team is preparing to tackle 2026 World Cup qualifiers and 2025 AFCON qualifiers, they are now focused on getting a technical staff that can do the job.

Coach Velud was making a belated first AFCON appearance after the 64-year-old Frenchman was shot in the arm in an attack on the Togo team bus by separatists in the Angolan enclave of Cabinda on the eve of the 2010 Cup of Nations finals. He and the rest of the Togo side went home before the tournament started.

He later qualified Sudan to the last tournament in Cameroon two years ago but was fired weeks before the kick off after a poor performance at the 2021 Arab Cup in Qatar.

He joins the list of coaches who have already departed after the Cup of Nations tournament in Ivory Coast.

Djamel Belmadi of Algeria, Rui Vitoria of Egypt, Tom Saintfiet of Gambia, Chris Hughton of Ghana, Baciro Cande of Guinea Bissau, Jean-Louis Gasset of Cote D’Ivoire, Adel Amrouche of Tanzania and Jalel Kadri of Tunisia have all left their posts in recent weeks.
