Blow: Kudus, Osimhen out of ‘jellof derby’

Star forwards Victor James Osimhen and Mohammed Kudus will miss the high-profile friendly clash of West Africa’s heavyweight Ghana and Nigeria this Friday, March 22 at the Stade de Marrakech in Morocco.

Sources say Kudus, who was named coach Otto Addo’s first Ghana’s squad on his return is out of the Nigeria game and that against Uganda in Morocco due to a shoulder discomfort.

The 23-year-old West Ham United goal poacher reportedly felt a shoulder discomfort after last weekend’s Premier League game against Aston Villa and will stay at his club to focus on his recovery throughout the international break.

On the part of the Nigerians, lead striker Victor Osimhen, 25, has been excused from the game after his club announced he picked up a knock and has been subjected to treatment after a demanding start to 2024.

The African footballer of the year will be missed by Nigeria though they have enough firepower to do without him against Ghana and later against Uruguay.

Osimhen and Kudus who were expected to be the poster boys in the high-profile ‘jellof derby’ will be unavailable for their nations.

Even with these major absences, both nations have enough quality to stage a memorable spectacle even if it’s just the first game for returning Otto Addo and a debut as Super Eagles interim head coach Finidi George.
