Banyana Banyana were held to a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifier against the Democratic Republic of Congo in Kinshasa on Wednesday evening.
A first-half strike from Kgalebane Mohlakoana gave South Africa the lead and an important away goal, but Ruth Monique’s equaliser for the hosts ensured the tie remains finely balanced ahead of next week’s second leg at the FNB Stadium.
The team has faced a period of uncertainty, with head coach Desiree Ellis absent due to ongoing contract negotiations with the South African Football Association. Assistant coach Thinasonke Mbuli stepped in to lead the side in Kinshasa, guiding an experienced squad anchored by captain Refiloe Jane and veteran goalkeeper Ayanda Dlamini.
Playing away in the DRC is notoriously challenging, and both teams approached the match with caution in the opening stages. South Africa began to find their rhythm as the first half progressed, and in the 42nd minute, Mokoma’s clever run down the left set up Mohlakoana, who struck a powerful left-footed shot past the Congolese goalkeeper.
DR Congo responded swiftly, capitalising on a brief lapse in South African concentration. Ruth Monique found space to level the score just before half-time, silencing the visiting supporters.
The second half was tense, with both sides creating opportunities but unable to find a winner. The draw leaves the tie delicately poised, with South Africa holding the advantage of an away goal heading into the decisive second leg next Tuesday.
